Test Code SQ 25VITD, EPIC LAB535 Vitamin D 25 OH, Total

Methodology

Chemiluminescent Immunoassay

Performing Laboratory

Meriter Laboratories

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Serum

Container/Tube: Red top or serum gel

Specimen Volume: 0.5 mL

Collection Instructions: The following specimens will not be tested:

  1. Grossly hemolyzed or lipemic
  2. Containing particulate matter or exhibiting obvious microbial contamination
  3. Heterophilic antibodies in serum or plasma specimens may cause interference in immunoassays. These antibodies may be present in blood specimens from individuals regularly exposed to animals or who have been treated with animal serum products. Results, which are in consistent with clinical observations, indicate the need for additional testing.
  4. Do not use samples that contain fluorescein. Fluorescein levels of >0.10 ug/mL can produce falsely elevated results in this assay. Patients undergoing retinal fluorescein angiography can retain amounts of fluorescein in the body for long as 48 to 72 hours post-treatment. For patients with renal insufficiency, retention could be much longer.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerated (2oC - 8o C) for 7 days.

Frozen (≤-20° C) for 24 weeks.  Freeze only once.

Reference Values

Deficient: <20 ng/mL

Insufficient: 20-29 ng/mL

Normal: 30-80 ng/mL

High: 81-120 ng/mL

Note: Reported as critical to distinguish from high. Results will be called the next working day.
