Specimen Requirements

Once a steady-state has been achieved, and when peak and trough values are not critical, a draw time of 8 to 24 hours is recommended after an oral dose.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Preferred:

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin gel)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Avoid hemolysis and lipemia.

2. Label specimen as plasma.

 

Alternate:

Specimen Type: Serum

Container/Tube: Serum gel

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Avoid hemolysis and lipemia.

2. Label specimen as serum.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerate 48 hours/Frozen OK

Reference Values

Usually subtherapeutic: <0.5 ng/mL

Sometimes therapeutic (eg, CHF): 0.5-0.9 ng/mL

Therapeutic, usually nontoxic: 1.0-2.0 ng/mL

Usually toxic: 2.1-2.4 ng/mL

Critical value (automatic call-back): ≥2.5 ng/mL

Specimen Stability:

Plasma or serum is stable refrigerated (2° C-8° C) for 24 hours and frozen (≤-20° C) for 1 to 2 weeks.
