Note: This screen is for women between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin gel)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Patient does not need to be fasting.

2. Administer a 50 g oral dose of glucose tolerance beverage to patient.

3. Draw blood 1 hour after ingestion of glucose tolerance beverage.

4. Spin down within 30 minutes of draw.

5. Avoid hemolysis.

6. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, and date and actual time of draw.

Reference Values

<140 mg/dL at 1 hour

Note: 1. Ninety percent of women with gestational diabetes mellitus are >130 mg/dL.

2. In a patient with classic symptoms of hyperglycemia or hyperglycemic crisis, a random glucose ≥200 mg/dL is considered abnormal.

3. If abnormal, consider further evaluation with #SQ GTGESC, EPIC LAB2491 Glucose Tolerance, Gestational Test, 3 Hour, Plasma.

Specimen Stability:

Plasma is stable at ambient temperature (15o C-25o C) for 8 hours and refrigerated (2o C-8o C) for 72 hours.
