Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation:

Fasting (8 hour).

 

Performance of Test:

1. Draw blood for a fasting glucose.

2. Administer glucose tolerance beverage at a dose of 75 g for adults or 1.75 g/kg of weight for children.

3. Draw blood 2 hours from completion of ingestion of glucose tolerance beverage.

 

Specimen Collection:

Specimen Type: Plasma

Containers/Tubes: Light-green top (lithium heparin gel)

Specimen volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Spin down within 30 minutes of draw.

2. Avoid hemolysis.

3. Label tubes with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, and date and actual time of draw.

Reference Values

FASTING

Normal: 70-99 mg/dL

Pre-diabetes, impaired fasting glucose: 100-125 mg/dL

Diabetes, recommend repeat testing to confirm: ≥126 mg/dL

 

2 HOURS

Normal: 70-139 mg/dL

Pre-diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance: 140-199 mg/dL

Diabetes, recommend repeat testing to confirm: ≥200 mg/dL

Note: In a patient with classic symptoms of hyperglycemia or hyperglycemic crisis, a random glucose ≥200 mg/dL is considered abnormal.

Specimen Stability:

Plasma is stable at ambient temperature (15o C-25o C) for 8 hours and refrigerated (2o C-8o C) for 72 hours.
