Specimen Requirements

Whole blood must arrive within 4 hours of draw.

 

Specimen Type: Plasma, platelet poor

Collection Container/Tube: Light-blue top (3.2% sodium citrate)

Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Spin down, remove plasma, spin plasma again, and place platelet-poor plasma in plastic vial.

2. Hemolyzed or clotted specimen, partially filled tube, or whole blood specimen >4 hours old is not acceptable.

Additional Information:

1. Platelet count should be <10 K/mcL.

2. Whole blood specimen may be drawn and transported to UWHC Core Laboratory within 4 hours of draw.

Plasma-Frozen/Refrigerated NO/Ambient <24 hours OK

Whole Blood-Ambient 4 hours

Reference Values

≥18 years old: negative

Critical value (automatic call-back): all positive or borderline results
