Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation:
1. Draw specimen from patient at rest.

2. Patient should not exercise arm before or during blood draw.

3. Specimen drawn without a tourniquet is preferred. If that is not possible, draw specimen within 3 minutes of applying the tourniquet.

 

Specimen Type: Plasma, venous
Container/Tube: Dark-green top (lithium heparin)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

For Meriter Inpatient Specimens:

1. Draw venous blood.

2. Transport immediately to the laboratory. If delayed, place on wet ice.

3. Whole blood specimen must be tested within 15 minutes of draw.

 

For External Clients/Non-Meriter Specimens:

1. Draw venous blood.

2. Place tube on wet ice until processed.

3. Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells within 15 minutes of draw.

4. Freeze specimen. Send frozen specimen in plastic vial.

 

For Alternate Processing for Same Day Testing:

1. Draw venous blood.

2. Place tube on wet ice until processed.

3. Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells within 15 minutes of draw.

4. Specimen stable refrigerated for 24 hours.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Frozen/Refrigerated <24 hours OK

Reference Values

Reference Range: 0.5-2.0 mmol/L (venous collection)

Critical Value: >4.0 mmol/L (venous collection)
