Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Preferred:

Specimen Type: Whole blood
Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)

Specimen Volume: 2.5 mL

 

Alternate:

Specimen Type: Blood smears
Container/Tube: Slides

Specimen Volume: 2 to 4 well-prepared thin blood smears and 2 to 4 well-prepared thick blood smears

Collection Instructions:

1. Make smears from fingerstick or drops of blood from needle following venipuncture are also acceptable.

2. There should be no contact with any type of anticoagulant.

3. To prepare blood smears, use only clean, grease-free slides as follows:

 

Thin Blood Smears

1. Prepare with a “feathered edge”; should be no more than a single cell thick.

2. Do not fix; air dry only.

3. Label slides with patient’s full name (first and last), and date and time of collection.

4. Send slides in plastic slide holders.

 

Thick Blood Smears

1. Place a large drop of blood (preferably from a fingerstick) on a slide.

2. Using a corner of a second slide, spread drop by scratching carrier slide to make blood adhere.

3. Do not fix; air dry only.

4. Label slides with patient’s full name (first and last), and date and time of collection.

5. Send slides in plastic slide holders.
