Methodology

This test is for Meriter Hospital patients only.


Includes ABO, Rh, direct anti-human globulin and testing for passive maternal anti-A and anti-B on infant peripheral blood; and ABO, Rh, and antibody screen on maternal blood. In the absence of maternal blood, an antibody screen is performed using infant’s peripheral blood.

Additional testing such as antibody identification, phenotyping, or crossmatch will be performed when indicated.

Specimen Requirements

Infant blood and maternal blood are preferred for this test.

 

This test is required once each admission for infants receiving blood products. After 4 months of age, adult compatibility testing guidelines apply.

 

Infant

Specimen Type: Peripheral whole blood

Container/Tube: 2 Lavender-top (EDTA) Microtainers-Serum gel tube is not acceptable.

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Specimen must be labeled with infant's full name, date of birth, date sample obtained, and initials of person obtaining specimen.

 

Maternal - may require

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Pink Top

Specimen Volume: 6 mL

Collection Instructions: Specimen must be labeled with mother’s full name, Medical Record number, date, and name of person drawing blood.

Specimen Transport Temperature

 Refrigerated/Ambient 4 to 6 hours OK/Frozen NO
