Specimen Requirements

Reference ranges are based on 3.2% sodium citrate anticoagulant.

 

Whole blood specimen must arrive within 24 hours of draw.

 

Plasma specimen must arrive within 8 hours of draw. If specimen will not arrive within 8 hours, freeze plasma at -20° C.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Light-blue top (3.2% sodium citrate)

Specimen Volume: 2.7 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. It is imperative that tube be completely filled.

2. Ratio of blood to anticoagulant is critical for valid results.

 

Specimen Type: Plasma

Collection Container/Tube: Light-blue top (3.2% sodium citrate)

Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial

Specimen Volume: 1.5 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. It is imperative that tube be completely filled.

2. Ratio of blood to anticoagulant is critical for valid results.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerated/Ambient <8 hours OK/Frozen OK

Reference Values

INR: 0.8-1.2

Therapeutic ranges for Coumadin therapy will remain the same.

 

INR THERAPEUTIC

2.0-3.0 (low-to-moderate intensity)

2.5-3.5 (moderate intensity)

Critical value (automatic call-back): ≥4.5

Critical results will be called to the client if the INR result is ≥4.5, unless the critical is consistent with previous results.

Specimen Stability:

Plasma is stable frozen (≤-20° C) for 2 weeks.
