Specimen Requirements

Reference ranges are based on 3.2% sodium citrate anticoagulant.

 

Specimen must arrive within 4 hours of draw.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Specimen Type: Whole blood

Container/Tube: Light-blue top (3.2% sodium citrate)

Specimen Volume: 2.7 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. It is imperative that tube be completely filled.

2. Ratio of blood to anticoagulant is critical for valid results.

3. If patient is receiving heparin, spin down and separate plasma within 1 hour of draw.

 

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Light-blue top (3.2% sodium citrate)

Specimen Volume: 1.5 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. It is imperative that tube be completely filled.

2. Ratio of blood to anticoagulant is critical for valid results.

3. If patient is receiving heparin, spin down and separate plasma within 1 hour of draw.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerated within 4 hours/Ambient OK within 4 hours/Frozen OK for 30 days at -20° C.

Note: Any specimens for patients on Heparin therapy should be sent as whole blood unspun or spun platelet-poor plasma within 2 hours of collection. Frozen platelet-poor plasma specimens are stable for up to 30 days.

20.0-35.0 seconds

Therapeutic APTT: 65.0-89.0 seconds (Meriter Hospital only)
Critical value (automatic call-back): >200.0 seconds
