Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation:
1. Draw specimen from patient at rest.

2. Patient should not exercise arm before or during blood draw.

3. Specimen drawn without a tourniquet is preferred. If that is not possible, draw specimen within 3 minutes of applying the tourniquet.

 

 

Specimen must arrive within 15 minutes of draw or <2 hours if kept on ice unopened.

 

 

Specimen Type: Plasma or whole blood
Container/Tube: Lithium heparin, blood gas syringe, lithium heparin capillary tube (Inpatient only)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Draw arterial blood in syringe.

2. Transport immediately to the laboratory. If delayed, place on wet ice.

3. Whole blood specimen or capillary sample must be tested within 15 minutes of draw.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Once plasma has been separated: Refrigerated <24 hours/Frozen OK

Reference Values

Reference Range: 0.5-1.6 mmol/L (arterial collection)

Critical Value: >4.0 mmol/L (arterial collection)
