Important Note

NEW INTERFERENCE CLAIM:

Patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (i.e. > 5 mg/day), could cause a +/- 10% change in their PTH results. It is recommended by Roche that samples should not be drawn until at least 8 hours following the last biotin administration.

Specimen Requirements

Note: Clients must send 2 specimens-1 specimen for calcium testing and a separate specimen for PTH testing. See details below.

 

Minerals (CA):

Specimen Type: Plasma

Container/Tube: Light-green top (lithium heparin gel)

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Avoid hemolysis.

2. Label specimen as plasma for minerals.

 

PTH:

PTH Preferred:

Specimen Type: Plasma

Collection Container/Tube: Lavender top (EDTA)

Submission Container/Tube: Plastic vial

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Collection Instructions:

1. Spin down as soon as possible and aliquot plasma into a plastic vial.

2. If specimen cannot be centrifuged, send whole blood refrigerated within 4 hours.

3. Avoid hemolysis and lipemia.

4. Label specimen as plasma.

Additional Information: Specimen can not be shared with other whole blood testing (ie, CBC or A1C).

 

PTH Acceptable:

1. Centrifuge immediately after blood has clotted.

Specimen Stability:

Calcium:

Plasma is stable at ambient temperature (15o-25o C) for 7days, refrigerated (2o-8o C) for 3 weeks, and frozen (≤-15o C) for 8 months.

 

PTH Preferred Specimen:

EDTA plasma is stable at ambient temperature (15°-25° C) for 2 days, refrigerated (2°-8° C) for 3 days, and frozen (≤-20° C) for 6 month.
PTH Alternate Specimen:

Serum is stable at ambient temperature (15°-25° C) for 8 hours, refrigerated (2°-8° C) for 2 days, and frozen (≤-20° C) for 6 month.
